Have you ever heard of Saint Catherine of Siena? This famous, celebrated patron saint of Italy and Europe and “Doctor of the Church” was born in the famous Palio city of Siena. If you are curious to know more then don’t miss this tour. You will visit locations that were important in the life of Saint Catherine.
Accompanied by a professional guide you will start the tour by visiting the Saint Dominico Church where the young Catherine had her first vision of Jesus. She became a secular nun and was known to regularly experience the state of ecstasy during prayer. You can see her mummified head and right thumb in the church.
Proceeding you will visit the Sanctuary House where Catherine was born in 1347 along with her twin sister, she was preceded by 23 siblings.
Today her humble abode has become a place of prayer in three parts: The Church of the Crucifix outside of which Saint Catherine received her “invisible stigmata” and her bedroom where some of her most precious belongings can be found.
As a devoted missionary nun The Saint dedicated her time to helping the needy, sharing a prayer at the Saint Marie della Scale Hospital. The tour will end here after visiting the cathedral.
You will be surprised to see the size and wealth of the hospital, it embodies the history, culture and sufferance of the pilgrims and poor who momentarily found refuge here.
